I am a relatively new collector also.
Chips are made of plastic, clay and synthetic
materials. Regular house chips are not dated.
Limited edition or commemmorative chips that
pay tribute to someone or an event are usually
dated. I am not familiar with metal tokens but
I believe they are mainly used for the slot
machines. I hope this helps you.
