That is the best way to handle it. If you bought something for $60 and he insured it for $100 guess how much you get? I bought 3 boxes of ashtrays a few years ago and they were poorly packed. About 1/3 of them were broken or chipped. They ended up being insured for more than I paid for them plus I got to keep the remains. You don't always get to keep the item afterward but it can't hurt to ask if you know your postman. If you let the seller handle the paper work then you have to get your money back from him.
