Matt,
Rule number 1 is never return to the same table after you "adopted" some roulette chips. By the way I like your choice of "adopted" instead of "pocketing", "keeping", "taking" and etc.
Or if you have to return never play with the same dealer or check rackers.
At the Claridge when I was dealing roulette some years ago, the Pit Boss and two security guard tackled a player to the floor and took out the roulette chips he pocketed. The Pit Boss called the camera to record the play. He was so sure about the player having several stacks of chips confronted him but denied, when the Pit Boss stretched his arm to point to the pocket the player grabbed his hand and the two uniform security men flattened the guy on the floor. The DGE came over and arrested the player.
It is a big offense in Atlantic City casinos to take away roulette chips. They don't even allow you to palm them. You are required to place them on the table where the dealer, floor person and the camera can see.
As soon as a player leaves the table the dealer count the chips right away tell the supervisor your description and the color of chips you got. They can see you as soon as you walk away to the distance of the next table. At the beginning of the day or at the opening of roulette table the first thing the supervisor and the dealer do is inventory the roulette chips, you will notice at the right side of the wheel there is a roulette score card which list the inventory. Some casinos inventory every hour or dealer break change, but most supervisor do it mentally instead of actual writing of the chips.
If you want to hit the roulette table you must go out on busy days like holidays or on weekends, but never return to the same table.
I have no experience roulette chip harvesting but last year I went with a harvester to several casinos and watched how he did it. But inspite of the fact of his "cleaverness" a security guard approached him nicely and told him politely to return the chips to the table which he did.
You should be thankful that the dealer in your table was at least polite to asked you to return the chips or leave the table.
You got the "joy of chipping" now.
Regards.
