However, it seems to be different than yours. We get no notices of incoming virus detection, and we have not had a virus since last December.

I run a virus scan and update check at least once a day. Once I got my act together and updated McAfee Virus Scan I also installed a McAfee firewall. One of the things the firewall does, or can do, is limited or block programs within your computer from going out and reporting your activity.
