I agree with Mike.
I think by several people placing initial bids it may create somewhat of a bidding frenzy and drive up prices. Great for the seller, not so for the buyer.
By placing a snipe bid at the end, one demonstrates the max he is willing to pay.
By placing an initial bid at the beginning can only drive up the bid at the end
