Have you tried acetone on celluloid, Allan? It's pretty active and will dissolve most plastics.

I use naphtha for removing sticky stuff, like label residue. Haven't tried it on celluloid, but it hasn't softened anything I've cleaned yet. Available in most paint stores as Paint and Varnish Makers Naphtha. It's cheap.
