John, you got lucky............ real lucky.
First, Beaujoulais are usually consumed very young and at 15 years ??
Second a dry cork is usually a sign that the wine may have been improperly stored.
Generally wines are laid flat to keep the cork moist. Keeping the cork moist prevents the infiltration of air which would in fact result in the wine turning in vinegar.
