Serial numbers don't really tell us too much other than the quantity of pieces produced (if we know the first and last number in the series 
).
Newer manufacturers' catalogs tell us that the serial numbers (a security measure) are an option... and, there are those crazies like myself who search the world over for the 00001 pieces...
