I'm assuming you're referring to Texas Hold'em which is probably the most popular poker game in casinos and card rooms. Michael is right on when he suggests starting with either the Lee Jones (Winning Low Limit Hold'em)or Lou Krueger (Hold em Excellence) books as a great way to start--I'm partial to the Jones book myself. I avoid the play money websites, not very realistic as players have nothing to lose and stay with about anything--I call it Video Hold'em. A better way to practice is with good software--here I suggest Turbo Texas Hold'em, from Wilson Software. Tournaments are also a fun way to play, defined, limited investment and the chance to make a larger amount.
