What is the difference between having a realistic acceptable starting bid (such as a stated minumum) and a reserve.

I realize not all people are like me, but personally I do not even bother bidding on anything that has a reserve on it. I want to know the minimum price that someone wants for an item. If I feel it's fair, I'll bid--if not, I pass, but I'm not about to play games trying to figure out what you want for what you are selling.
