More on Gazzarri's chips

According to T.R. King, these chips were ordered in 1965 by Gazzarri's, 9039 Sunset Strip, Hollywood, CA.

Gazzarri's was a rock & roll club from the 1963 through the 1991 operated by Bill Gazzarri, who billed himself as "The Godfather of Rock & Roll". The Doors, the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and Metallica were among many of the acts who played there, and it was the first club to give Van Halen a shot. According to Gazzarri in a 1979 letter to The Los Angeles Times, David Lee Roth had informed him upon being hired that the band had auditioned at 19 area clubs and were turned down every time. The band earned $75 per gig at Gazzarri's and sometimes after a good night, Gazzarri would slip Roth $20, telling "Van" it was a little something extra.

I have yet to figure out what the chips were used for, or why they say "Broadway" when the club was on the Sunset Strip. I e-mailed Arthur Blessit who was known during the 60's as "The Minister of Sunset Strip". He used to preach onstage at Gazzarri's to the hippies back then. He was confused by the "Broadway" reference too. He assures me the club was "Gazzarri's Hollywood A-Go-Go".

Incidentally, the same location, 9039 Sunset Strip, was the location of Sherry's Restaurant, which was popular with the mob in the 1940's. Outside Sherry's is where Bugsy Siegel's right-hand man Mickey Cohen was ambushed in 1949.

The building was demolished in 1994 and a new building was built on the site, another rock club called "The Key Club".

I have five blue chips, two green chips and one orange chip that I'd like to trade for small crown or large crown chips or older Nevada chips. E-mail me if you're interested.
