Just testing, James. I knew someone would call me on that. C&J & Burt Co. Long Cane Variety (LCV) both have the left side of the cane far from the brim. Only the Paulson Short Cane Variety (SCV) has the left side of the cane near the brim. As Gene related from Jim Blanchard, it is sometimes difficult to tell which mold it is as they were interchanged and Burt sold more shiny hat orders to Paulson than they did to Christy & Jones. The Silver Palace that you mentioned is a great example. I can't tell because of the following:
C & J center inlay chips are supposed to have deep, shiny, slick hats AND a lead disc under the paper inlay for weight. The non-shiny hats did not have lead weights under the center inlays......except for Silver Palace. Some of their chips had shiny, slick hats and some had dull, pebblely hats but ALL OF THEM had lead weights. I try to describe them the best I can but sometimes I get confused. Luckily, most of them are fairly easy, but as you said, there are some in there to drive us batty.
