Just a thought..if it keeps happening, you could try a whole-house surge supressor. They fit in your circuit breaker box and protect the entire house from spikes and such if the lightning strikes the power line before it enters your house.

It doesn't protect phone lines or from strikes that hit, say, external electrical outlets.

Also, I highly recommend a UPS over a surge supressor. They cost more, but they protect you from brown-outs which no surge supressor can do. If the power goes out completely, the UPS will safely save all your documents and then shut off our computer.
