There is a significant difference between ownership of the item and ownership of the underlying rights, but ownership of the item will give use to certain "fair use" rights.

Thus if I go buy a book I have no right to simply photocopy every page and sell copies of the book, but I do have the right to take a picture of the book and display the picture as an advertisement for the sale of the book.
