Most baccarat chips are oversize and have the word 'baccarat' on their inlay. That's not true of all older baccarat chips, but I believe all current Las Vegas chips marked 'baccarat' are oversize. Tropicana had a $25 that was regular size till they discontinued the game a year or so ago. Harrahs LV had a regular size $20 for baccarat that was also discontinued a year or so ago.
Some clubs use oversize baccarat chips only for the larger denominations (usually $100+), with the regular game chips used for smaller denominations. A few, like London Club at Aladdin, have them for lower denominations (even $1). Occasionally you'll find a REALLY oversize chip marked for baccarat. The last I know of in Las Vegas was the $25000 for Dunes, but there may be some big ones still in play elsewhere as most of us don't get to collect these high-denominations.
I don't know the answer to why they make chips just for the game, but I speculate that it's to make the high-rollers who usually play this game feel more 'special'.
Baccarat (and regular table chips) are technically 'cheques' since they are given to you as a receipt when you cheque your money at the table. Nobody but Howdy Herz uses this terminology in normal conversation though [g].
Most roulette and n/d poker chips are really 'chips', as they aren't marked with any denomination.
By the way, there's only one "R" in BACCARAT, even though it looks wrong that way [g].
