Hi Will,
Chris (wife) and I are not VETS. We have been collecting for about two years. We decided right at the beginning to narrow our focus to Nevada 1$ chips, no LE's, etc. But many folks specialize in Riverboat chips, Cruise ship chips, Indian casino chips etc.
It's probably best to sit yourself down and imagine what you'd like your collection to look like. I buy chips on EBAY & JACKPOT, we attend chip shows in and around the midwest and we went to our first CHIPPER"s Convention in Las Vegas in June 0f 2002. A MUST GO!.
We trade and use two books, the Chip Rack and the Official US Casino Chip Price Guide and then we let ourselves get carried away. It just depends on your resources, and what you want, and how good looking, or nostalgic, or historical you want to get.
Chris and I stay at the Flamingo, so we collect theirs, we had dinner at the Dunes the first night and the Desert Inn had a great Casino and restaurant so we collect theirs. We love the Golden Gate Shrimp Cocktails, etc, etc.
Good Luck, I'm sure others more savvy than I will chime in!
