Hi Jane,
Our chip collection is small, so it's manageable! (probably 1000 chips)
I use 2 1/2" cardboard holders, in 12 pocket pages, in 1" 3 ring binders. We only collect Nevada, and the binders are divided and labelled:
"downtown 1, 2, 3, 4, 5"
"Strip 1, 2, 3..."
"Other Las Vegas ..."
"Reno..."
"Tahoe...."
"Laughlin..."
"Other Nevada..."
Included in the binders are plastic pages with postcards, brochures, fun books, coasters, photos, a few tokens, matchbook covers....about anything that's flat and 8 1/2" x 11" or smaller!!
By using the 1" binders, the size and weight is comfortable to handle when we want to look at (or work with) the collection.
When I set it up, I left some of the chip pockets empty so it's easy to add chips (they're alphabetical, by casino)...when a page is full, I add another page. When a binder is full, I add a binder!
We do have a couple of framed chip displays...and the "display chips" must meet two guidelines:
They must be duplicates, or non-Nevada (If there's a chip I want to look at, I just go to the binder....not gonna search the walls for it! )
They must be low end (don't want to risk sun or U.V. fading a high-end chip)
We also have a cut-glass bowl with a buncha chips in it! They're non-Nevada, monograms, generic poker chips, duplicates, etc. The grandkids play with them sometimes, I occasionally use a stack of them in a display of casino "stuff", sometimes we'll just shuffle through them to hear the clicking of chips!
Like others have said....Welcome to the hobby, and have FUN with it!
