My understanding is that the early obsolete Frontier plastic chips were destroyed by burning. This was before there were concerns about air polution. I don't know the dates, but sometime in the last 25 years or so. The coin inlays didn't burn and were scooped up by someone over the years and occasionally show up on the collector market. You often see them on eBay as 'rare Frontier tokens'.
