...and there are a few things that you missed in my post.
I've been homeless. I lived in my car. I didn't sit around all day doing nothing, waiting for a handout, or worse, begging for one. I found glamorous jobs like cleaning mortar off of used brick for a cent and a half a brick, or stripping cars in a junkyard for lunch and $15 a day to put food in my glove box and shoes on my feet. There, by the grace of God, I WAS!
The one form of welfare that any able bodied male who is un- or under-employed can get is food stamps. All the guys hanging out somewhere doing nothing can get government assistance to buy food.
Helping someone, anyone, to maintain a lifestyle that consists of doing nothing day after day is not compassion. Helping them find a way to lead a productive life IS compassion.
