Thanks - it seems that this may be the method I've been looking for. My comments about conversion charges were assuming I had been sent a US$ travellers cheque, but it does seem that there wouldn't be a further charge for a Sterling travellers cheque. Shame my bank coudldn't suggest that in the first place!
