Since this is a your opinion request I will answer and then read the other replies. This is a good interesting subject and worth knowing others and expressing our own opinions. Maybe some of the casinos representitives will see these and find something to consider and build on. I know some of them do read this board.
I enjoy collecting LE chips in general as there are plenty of occasions and individuals worthy of commemoration with such chips. However I would agree that there are too many chips released for what I consider insignificant occasions and do cause some burn out in the collecting of all LE chips. I hate to hear of those who have gotten bored with them to the point where they feel they must sell their collections. That is not the spirit that I believe this hobby stands for.
Some casinos do lend themselves well to frequent LE chips based on their themes. Hard Rock for example. It is fitting for them to release the customary holliday chips along with chips promoting or commemorating events that are held there. Also chips recarding milestones and "Hall Of Famers"(?) in the music industry are possibilities and fitting. Other properties though seem to be grasping at some thin excuses for producing chips. Daylight Savings Time? Give me a break. Horoscope signs? I don't think so.
Personally I prefer either those that are artistically significant and pleasing in design, or those that have a historical story to tell about the property or gaming or Las Vegas in general. I was a bit excited with the Trop and their Implosions series. However I only remember 1 chip being released. I have the Dunes. Were there ever any others? I also have the Folles chip. The Bugsy Anniversary chip from Flamingo and one of my faves was George Burns 100th. I wonder if there is a demand for Sammy Davis, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra and others being commemorated as historical performers in Vegas History. Certainly Bob Hope might warrant an upcoming chip for his 100th Birthday?
As I started to point out Holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentines Day, St. Pats Day,... 4th of July... are all fitting as many, I am sure make trips to LV, AC or other locales for such occasions. Some large conventions or events like NASCAR races, the rodeo, fights... major sports events relating to sports betting in casinos are also fitting events worth promoting or commemorating.
I could probably go on but basically those are my feelings. I just think that it would be better if the casinos reigned themselves in a little and considered the overall creative or historical... significance a proposed release has. If the artists that they use have a really cool idea that can stand on its own for art's sake that would be OK but I just think there are too many chips that have no value, meaning or significance out there. Produced just for the sake of producing. In closing I ask this question. How many people make pilgrimages to their local casino to celebrate a Solstice or equinox.
