The statistics were biased in this report, though. It included the delivery time for local (same city) first class mail which is usually 1-2 days. My experience has been that Priority Mail beats 1st class for long-distance delivery (1000 miles or so). There were some terrorist-scare transients in the last few months that caused Priority Mail that would normally fly, to go by truck. This will likely settle out.
Priority Mail is still the best bargain for consumer small-package deliveries in my opinion. Remember, UPS charges a surcharge to deliver to residences. Airborne and FEDEX are in another class, and compete with USPS Express Mail.
