I am converned, not only because I tend to leave a tip on teh last day (I'll do it daily from now on), but I have always left the tip (usually a note plus any change I have as I don't tend to bring change back to the UK) on a table.

To me this is obviously a tip, but from what you have said the maid shouldn't take it as I don't leave a note - so who gets it. Surely not the hotel!
