In most cases you are right, you never recover the money you lost while on strike.

BUT, sometimes if you don't strike, you can lose more due to regressive take aways, cumulatively speaking, over several contracts. Everybody has to decide where there line in the sand is & once that line is crossed, you do what you have to do.

While on strike, what you hope for is to keep the wolves away from the door, food on the table, & not worry about the money you're missing out on.
