Most casino companies run their rooms as a profit center now. Not like the old days when they were a "loss leader".
For Aztar Corp (Tropicana's parent company) for the year ending 1-3-2002, they reported room revenues of $75,804,000 vs. room costs & expenses of $39,348,000 for a profit contribution of $36,456,000 at the margin. (The way this is reported, fixed costs are a separate line item, so the rooms aren't truly THAT profitable. This only compares marginal revenues vs. costs.) Also, the above is for all Aztar Corp properties. Individual property info on rooms was not broken out.
