Ah heck... NOTHING surprises me anymore.
I don't "assume" anything except that it is safe not to assume anything.

Some years ago, I adopted an I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ANYTHING" policy - especially when trying to figure "other people" out. I just try to be "fair" and consider that "others" may think things differently than I do.

He didn't answer MY email ~~ I don't know WHY ... so I get to "make something up". I 'figure' one of the following may be true:

A. He really believes his 27 chips will bring him $4700 (or $4500 plus a Gold Eagle )
B. He is stubborn OR
C. He is stupid

It isn't up to me to determine which one.

As a note... I am glad no one bid on his auction as I would have been forced to email the bidder with the truth.
