I want to apologize for using Doug's name without asking. It was wrong. Hopefully everyone will realize that I used his name because of his tremendous stature within the hobby.
I'm also sorry that this is what everyone fixated on. I'm a serious collector and I was trying to ask a serious question. I was at Bill Akeman's show a few weeks ago. I sat in on a long conversation with a number of dealers and the fellow who's at the center of this brass core issue. He seemed of the opinion that making almost any chip wasn't insurmountable, the biggest challenge was getting the right color of clay or plastic. (He was answering a question and not proposing anything). That got me thinking (for the first time) about my most valuable chips. What if a noted and respected individual in the hobby were to slab chips on his own? In effect the slabbed chip would say that this noted individual carefully examined this chip on this day and labels it genuine and in "slightly used" condition (or whatever the Club recommends.)
It's just an idea in my mind. My question (in which I tried to be a lot briefer than this message) was not whether this changes anyone's mind about whether they would collect slabbed chips. The honest, serious question was whether this would deal with with the key objections of those who want the practice banned from the Club. It seemed to me that anonymity and grading were no longer an issue. I was curious whether there were other major objections that I was missing.
