After several days of work, I have reformatted and reloaded my pc's disk. You can now ignore my post about not opening my email if it has an attachment. Virus scans are still appropriate, as you could get mail from other's pc's that appear to be from me, but I am clean again.
Recovering from this situation was an eye opener for me. First, I caused the problem by opening an attachment when I was not sure it was clean. I have been careful not to do this in the past but slipped up on this one.
Second, I have backed up my data files on a regular basis, but haven't concerned myself with the operating system and application programs. It's amazing how much time it takes to find all the installation disks, load them in the right order, update all the driver files, install updates available only by downloading, tweaking all the customization options, and getting the screen colors, fonts, etc to look as they did. I have invested over 20 hours in this recovery and am now back on line on the desktop pc, but am still not finished tweaking.
I'm going to have to investigate ways to save EVERYTHING on my hard disk periodically!
