Pictured below are two different Wyndham Hotel and Casino, San Juan, PR chips that I just got several weeks ago. The chip on the right has two additional "inserts" (for lack of a better name on this type of chip). Both are white and are noted by the red arrows. While one is full (corner-to-corner) the other one is somewhat diffused.

At first I thought I had an error chip, until I compared it against a another Wyndham $1 chip that I received in an RR quite some time ago. It too had the same two white inserts, one full and the other diffused. I can only assume that more exist, both with and without the extra inserts, since I have at least two of each.

My questions are: is this common? what causes it? and is it by design?
