The toughest thing, IMHO, about obsolete chips, is that it is possible that they can again put in use, either at the same or another casino. So they are no longer obsolete, they are current. For example, the Harrah's Lake Tahoe $1 brass chip was retired when they put a new rack into play. But then the chips later showed up on the craps tables at Harrah's Reno.
