I don't think a universal system would work for exactly the reasons Archie noted--the work that would have to go into recoding chips in one's inventory. I went through that unhappy experience when my good friend Dale Seymour changed his codes for design clays and ivories--I had several thousand different chips and each had to be assigned a new code. I did it in my inventory but despaired changing the code numbers in my flips.
