There is some software that does a pretty good job of getting rid of pop-ups (like the infamous X10 or discover card popups at sites like MSN and CCNN). Probably the best one out there is called popup killer.

This doesn't kill banner advertisement, but does stop new browser sessions with the advertisements from killing your system (they come up and are killed immediately).
