I stayed in the Horseshoe rooms on the 2nd floor, back when the Mint was still in operation. Those 30 or so rooms were the only ones they had at that time. Quite an experience. The rooms had a Gay 90's decorating theme. Nicely decorated for what they had to work with. Striped wallpaper, old style lavatory with the 2 separate faucets for hot & cold, and an old style toilet and cast iron tub (not built into the wall). I think Benny's wife, Teddy, had supervised the room decoration, if I recall correctly. The 2 windows had these dramatic floor to ceiling curtains, but it you actually opened them, all you saw was the reverse side of the turquoise signing that runs around the Horseshoe... plus quite a few birds nests.
It WAS an experience. The service was nice, but once was enough.
FYI, if anyone's looking for this area, the original elevator, and also the staircase near the gift shop, lead up to these 2nd floor rooms. (Actually I thought they discontinued using them after they bought the Mint.)
