I think the comments about chips languishing in the cage for a long period of time have a couple of issues that might be realized here. If the chips are sitting around because they are not being given to dealers because of limits or because the casino produced 1500 instead of 750, I don't think the casino has too much to worry about. In fact, I think that it could be good in one respect. It would allow our hobby to grow. This is how. If a casino has a supply of a popular chip they could put a poster of sort or a display case (like at Harrahs LV)promoting the chips availability. That might entice more people to pick up a couple and thus a new collector might be born.
Also they could put chips in circulation and I think they would eventually dissappear. I have told the story before of my friend and I playing Blackjack at Luxor. I was taking chips and from time to time dropping them into my pockets. My friend asked what I was doing and I pointed out the chips and tokens and said I collect them. He thought it was cool and said he never thought of that. Needless to say he started picking up a few himself. If the casino put some out at the tables or put some display of what they have available in front of people where they might be subject to the impulse to pick them up or ask for them I think some people would still pick them up and maybe start their own collections.
The other reason that these chips my linger in the cage is because the casino is producing too many stupid chips with no real meaning or significance. If there are too many chips out there and the chips are on hand because no one wants them, then that is a strong message to the casino that they need to rethink their chip programs. Maybe 4Q and Trop. should be producing fewer issues of larger quantities and puting some purpose in their issues. Rather than producing a chip for any whim and producing them in low quantities.
Lastly, since I mentioned small limits earlier I would like to say that I do not support rediculously low limits on the NISs and the other dealers. I think they should be given a fair amount that would allow them to service their customers. I do not think that should be UNLIMITED quantities though and feel that some consideration should be made for the average collector and smaller hobbiest/dealers that want to get a few also.
