Gotta agree with Archie here.
Although I would like to have the convention in AC, it just isn't a very friendly place for these types of things - no matter what the tourist bureau wants you to believe.
Its not a problem getting convention space - if you're willing to spend the money, but any convention held during "peak" time in the area (and after Memorial Day qualifies) would be paying through the nose for a room.
In addition, the tables (for players) are not cheap. When a casino advertises - "we have $10 tables" (Claridge), there's a problem. (note; all the casinos offer $10 games sometime during the day, but even then they are really crowded). And its still not as 'chipper-friendly' as towns such as Vegas where you can buy chips at the cage. In AC very few understand when you go to a roulette table or craps table and ask for chips - when you can get close enough to it.
Personally, I would like to have a convention - or even just a show, in AC. Its close to my home and I have enough comps/points/good-will that I wouldn't pay for most meals, or even rooms. But recently watching a poker group I am affiliated with trying to set up a poker tournament down there, I can't imaging trying to coordinate something many times larger.
Now, maybe after the Borgata opens, and Harrahs finishes their tower, and Showboat and Tropicana finish their new towers with the addition of (guestimate) 10K rooms it might be a little better. But for the next few years it would be more trouble than its worth. Of course by then ALL the table games will be gone and replaced by slots so there won't be any chips anyway
