In the last month, I got one envelope with the contents removed. Half of a another envelope and only half of the enclosed check, the other half of the envelope and check were returned to the sender. And today's envelope with a cracked chip.

The sender put this in a bubble mailer that was cut in half, I guess to qualify for the 34c postage rate. Envelopes that qualify for 34c postage go through automated mail handling equipment. This is fine for paper, but anything that is fragile can get broken. Larger envelopes are handled manually.
