Unless the chip is worn so much that the inlay is wearing away, I'd use 400 wet/dry with a little baby oil gel. I'd then follow up with a higher grade to polish it. If you start with 1200 it'll take forever to remove a burn mark.
Btw, I also answered your question above but I used AOL so it won't appear for a while. The Kroch chips started out in great shape.
