From my experience on the Gulf Coast fog density is not real predictable and is not worth jeopardizing safety of crew & passengers regardless if they are winning are losing. We (my company) occasionally have fogbound (crude oil) ships stuck in the Gulf for a couple of days, believe me the value of that cargo DWARFS the profits a gaming boat can make in a day. EVERYONE concerned wants the ship at the dock! Wish it was only a matter of money to bring in a ship! We would never sweat another late arrival!
Much of the time an independent pilot (not working for the cruise line) is driving the boat once the boat is inside Texas waters. Europe Jet only drove their boat about 4 miles each trip. The last 2 miles out and the first 2 back in, (What a job! ) the rest were by a Galveston pilot. I have never seen anyone over rule them yet in their calls on bringing a ship in or not.
Sorry you had a bad trip, but the weather and the Gulf are not something to screw around with. ….
