The spell checker isn't really related to the bb software. The spell checker is a net based spell checker that anyone can add to their site. The bb software author just incorporated it into this version of the bb software. At that time the spell checker was free to end users as it was ad supported. Apparently, the ads didn't support it so they started charging for it's use.
