Steve makes some excellent points there. A gem of an article, and good advise whether for a newbie or experienced collector. I've had more enjoyment once I learned to focus (mostly) on fewer areas of interest. Though I let myself stray too, once and a while.
It's important to have some discipline and structure, but it's a hobby too. Fortunately, there's room to collect from the heart and well as the head, if you know what I mean. And there's a multitude of niches to specialize in, including many that don't require major $$$ to curate an impressive group of items.
Along with the tangible items, acquiring knowledge about the HISTORY surrounding the collection is enjoyable too. And don't forget, there's joy in the PURSUIT too. And finally, there's enjoyment in SHARING our collecting interests with other collectors, whether on this BB or in person at chip conventions and in one-on-one settings!
By the way, it was a pleasure to see some of Steve's collection, as assembled at the Legends museum at the Tropicana. I toured it a number of times and got something fresh from it each time. A really immersive experience for Chip/Las Vegas/Gambling/Etc. history buffs like me!
Thanks Steve!
