While I don't disagree with this statement, I think it only applies to universally wanted or currently hot items like say Vegas Strip Casino chips. When it comes down to "niche" items like California Card Rooms or Cruise Chip ships, then the audience for these chips is much smaller and better educated in which chips are rare and which are common. It's imperative for sellers to know the market they are selling in or they're not going to get full value for the chips they wish to sell. If you know the market set your price and if it doesn't sell you can always lower it. Check past Ebay sales, Worthpoint or even forum sales for a better understanding of where the market is on a particular chip. If you have a $35 chip and list it as $150 or Best Offer hoping the buyer will set the price for you...then you might as well also post "I don't know what I have or what I am doing"
For example, let's say you start a one week auction at $1 for a small audience chip. You're probably going to get a much lower price than market because there are way fewer bidders for that particular item in a specific short amount of time than if it were listed in perpetuity. Factor in that some of that audience might not even see that 1 week auction before it expires, and you could easily go from 6 potential bidders to two. If one of those two forgets to bid or something comes up then you get one guy getting super lucky one a great chip for a super cheap price.
Conversely, if you are selling a Nevada Lodge 8 Pie chip or Tropicana $1 small crown then yes you can start an auction out at $1 because not only will you get the large audience of bidders looking for that type of chip, but you will also draw in many more by the possibility of getting a great chip at an initial low low price.
I think lots and sample sets are a great way to sell for both seller and buyer. If you let the buyer cherry pick out the best chips, then you're going to be stuck with a lot of extras that will sit. For the buyer lots are great because it's one stop shopping with just one shipment for multiple chips they probably want.
Jay has always had the best chips and been super easy to deal with...as well as being a great mentor in CA chips. GLWS!
See everyone in June
