A HARVEST STORY BY A GUEST AUTHOR

DEUCES WILD CARD ROOM – AUBURN, CA

By JAMES ERIC FREEDNER

When the Towers Card Room opened in Grass Valley one July weekend a couple of years back - I drove up there and stopped off at Deuces Wild which is located on a frontage road off I-80 west of Auburn proper. The casino was closed. A stack of last month's "Card Player" magazines was dumped at the doorstep, and some junk mail sat in the mailbox. The parking lot in front of the casino is paved (part of a small shopping plaza) and the rear lot was gravel. I walked around the lots, looking for any dropped chips. Rarely does this result in a find, but I have found chips often enough to give it a try. But, nothing at all.
On the way back from Towers, I stopped by again, it was around 6 or 7 PM by then and I figured the casino would be "open for the night." But, no. It dawned on me that the place looked closed for good, which turned out to be the truth. Missed it by a couple of months, at most.
Deuces Wild no longer has a current license and I don't know what happened to the building. And where are the chips, you ask? I have no idea! I bought one, a couple of years ago, think it came up on eBay, and I have seen exactly one other such chip since then, in a dealer's album at some show (maybe the February Super Show). Somebody must be "sitting on" at least a thousand of them, but apparently very few got out of the casino while it was in operation; I'd estimate maybe a dozen or two. The truly odd thing is that Deuces Wild is such a "modern" casino, one would think the Sacramento area collectors would have gotten a bunch out.
Its closure was sudden. Rumor had it that the place couldn't compete with all the Indian casinos in the area, but there must have been more to that story.
If you manage to turn up a Deuces Wild from your ChipBoard request, you will truly be One Lucky Reggie. I will keep an eye out for that chip but, I don't really expect to see it again soon.
