Can't tell by the scan, John. Is the scrimshawing sharp & expertly carved or is it fuzzy and poorly carved? Is the paint shiny and filled in everywhere at an even depth? Does the painted, scrimshawed area show as much wear as the chip itself? It is much easier to tell upon examination of the chip, as you well know. Are the chips thinner than the normal ivory chip? Quite a few counterfeits have been carved on the blanks that were found about 15 years ago. Some of the fakes used the Roman Numerals on the reverse of Arabic numerals and also on the reverse of reproductions of old clay chips that were pictured in Seymour's First Edition. Many of these counterfeits are pictured in Dale's latest fine edition.
