Very interesting, but slightly sad photos. The structure on the right was the "Cracker Box Card Room" (2227 Edison) from the 1950s to the 1970s.
The speculative attribution of the Square Square Rectangle B & B chip to the B & B Cafe in Bakersfield is likely mistaken. I made that connection and wrote the speculation about 2 years ago, soon after becoming a California ChipGuide Admin. I know better now, and will remove it.
The attribution to Bakersfield stems from the fact that similar B & B hot stamp chips on the Diamond Square mold were ordered by a Mr. Wilbur F. Barber in Bakersfield in 1959. I see looking at the Staeffler Guide now, that the SqSqRec chips are in fact also associated with him, so I will likely move this chip to that listing. ChipGuide listing;
Although the chips above could be for an illegal card room, these types of orders (300 or 500 non-denomination chips in three or four colors) are in my experience often home game sets. Often on the Staeffler Guide (and the California ChipGuide), chips with a somewhat similar monogram but on a different chip mold are associated with a documented chip with a similar monogram, solely because the monogram has the same initials. Very often, however, I think this is a mistake.
Unless anyone objects or has a better idea, I will move the SqSqRec chip to the above listing and leave a note on the chip comment field stating "Attribution may be based on the similarity to the DiSq chips ordered by Barber".
