Do you mean the number of colors that are used in the chip that is being scanned (example an all blue chip as opposed to a highly colored chipco). OR do you mean the setting that my scanner is set to... 16 million colors (that never changes).

It still seems to be a lot of difference (8k) from one scan to another.
