A little while ago Brass.chip posted a scan of an unknown "25" chip. Shown below are Brass Core chips from my collection.
When I looked at my chips, I noticed something curious about the alignment of the various denominations of this Series of chips. There are usually 2 types of alignment on coins and medals - referred to as "coin" alignment and "medal" alignment.
On "coin" aligned pieces - the design on both sides is aligned in the same direction on the obverse and the reverse. On "medal" alignment" pieces - the design is rotated 180 degrees from the obverse to the reverse of the piece.
Curiously, the alignment of the 6 chip set shown below varies from denomination to denomination.
The 1, 5 and 100 are "coin" aligned while the 25 is "medal" aligned. Further the 500 and 1000 chips are aligned 90 degrees from the obverse to the reverse. The 25 Brass Slug is "medal" aligned. I have no idea why the alignments are different from one denomination to the other ?? Are there examples of all 3 different alignments of all 6 chips ?? Walt G. do you have any input on this question ??
Also shown in the scan is an unusual $1 piece which is "coin" aligned. On this chip the plastic coating is obscuring part of the design in the area around the "diamond" on one side of the chip. Is this an error or some type of sample ??
Any comments or answers to my questions would be appreciated.
Take care,
