Learned this from my brother: Keep some of your papers "on ice"! Papers in the desk will burn up in a fire. The papers in a fireproof safe won't burn, but will they be accessible? Keep a waterproof container in your freezer with account numbers, copies of insurance policies, etc. If your home burns, the papers in the freezer should survive.
