I don't particularly like the idea of reserves either.
My feeling is it is a tool used to get the auction off and running.
If one was selling a reasonably expensive item and had no reserve a possible loss could be suffered by the seller.
On the same token if the reserve was the opening bid, it might scare away potential bidders.
It is no secret that in the heat of an auction people often bid beyond their normal limits.
