Simply stated, french ivory is fake ivory. It is made with various types of plastic. Many times powdered ivory is added to the mix. The lines on the French ivory set below gives the impression of schreger lines. Sometimes it hard to tell the difference between French ivory and actual ivory. I believe a hot pin would melt through French ivory. No so much with actual ivory
