If you buy the Norton AV 2002 standalone it is $49.95 with a $20 competitive rebate. This means the same price as one year of McAffee subscription. NAV also has a one-year subscription - same idea. (check if the rebate is still valid, it was when I bought it).
Both are very similar, I have used Norton's for years - even with it was Central Point Software so I stuck with them and have recently upgraded from 2000 to 2002. This was rather than upgrading my subscription to get the new engine (smaller memory usage, faster processing, extra scripting features, etc). May be something you want to do with McAffee.
They are so similar that it should not matter, however Symantec (at least right now) is faster at putting virus solutions out on the web - but only by hours or a day at most.
Also, if you are using Norton (at least in NAV 2000), you could uninstall and reinstall it, then you get a fresh subscription period. McAffee may work the same way... But we would do that would we?
